July 16, 2020 - Readings in Recovery: Today's Gift from Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation

Today’s Gift from Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation is:
Wherever there is a human being, there is an opportunity for kindness. — Seneca
In today’s world, it seems like kindness is not in style. It can feel more relevant to be tough or sassy, to have an attitude that “no one can touch me.”
This worked during our active addiction. As using addicts, we treated other people like objects. We ignored them, pushed them out of our way, or used them. No one got into our hearts. That’s the way addiction works. It separates us from our human support and feeds us alcohol and drugs.
In our recovery program, we stop being separate from everyone else. We join with them in creating support and caring for each other. We learn to be kind. First we ask for help and stop the insanity. Then we learn kindness to ourselves in Steps Six and Seven. Steps Eight, Nine, Ten, and Twelve teach us to be kind to others. Where does all this kindness lead us? To fairness, honesty, and having nothing to hide. To being a real person.
Prayer for the Day
Higher Power, remind me today to be kind to others. Even when I have nothing else to give, I can offer a smile. I can listen.
Today’s Action
I will list three unkind behaviors I still use and three kind ones I will practice instead.
